For my whole life, Istanbul--and its ghost Constantinople--has been a dream destination. When I go (next year?), Pamuk will be my guide. Before I read Snow, I never knew that there even was such a thing as a door-to-door yogurt salesman. And I came to care deeply about one! I can’t imagine what depths of feeling and understanding will come when Pamuk shows me his city! Though I’ve learned my lesson: I won’t judge anyone by body size, I promise!
You will LOVE this book. You must read The Museum of Innocence before you go!!!! Read M of I and then Istanbul, (in that order….for a reason I won’t disclose)! Haha, the “fat” bits jumped out at me and bothered me….perhaps I’m too colored by the hopeless present?!?!
Is accept your instructions on M of I followed by Istanbul! Time to start researching trips and tours. Maybe we’ll do Istanbul first, then hop over to India. Meanwhile, let me confess: I was a veritable font of inappropriate disparagement for much of my life, decrying “fat” people, “cripples,” “retards,” etc., even though I felt like I was an anti-racist. Then I realized what an asshole I was being. So glad I “woke” up! It’s one more reason not to be judgmental—remembering what a thoughtless tool I personally have been, at times. But at least I finally stopped! #wisdom #nottoolate
Wow and I haven't been very different myself. And now, what do you know, I may not say anything without my two children trying to fix me:-) I wrote this post last week the day after the Oscars (https://bit.ly/3llJqP0) and got lambasted for it. Still haven't heard the end of it from my daughter:-)
Thanks for this, Kalpana. I’ve had this book for years, and somehow it’s never made it to the top of my TBR list. That changes today. And maybe I’ll pick up Museum of Innocence too!
Thanks so much for reading, Cheryl. How wonderful to hear you'll read it and that my writing made a small dent in your mindset. I found it valuable for the book I'm building. SO many other things I could have talked about but I figured readers have to discover it for themselves. There are some things I did not want to give away. Incidentally, if possible, read Museum of Innocence BEFORE you read Istanbul.
Your review was very helpful.
