Such a wonderful writeup, Kalpana. You capture the strange and disturbing ethos of this book so well. I read it some twenty years back and it haunted me for a long time without my being able to put a finger to exactly what it was that unsettled me so much. I didn't have Google then to help clarify matters!

Thanks, Kamini. I haven’t got all my loose ends tied though. I wish I could get my doubts cleared, haha! I’m so very impressed by your reading list, my dear.

Thought provoking read. I liked your comments in the last para. I am reminded of my confessions everyday. "Yani kanicha papani Janmathara kriyanicha, thani thani vinashyanthi prathakshina pathe pathe".

Can you translate for this poor soul? Thank you so much!!!! I'm so glad it resonated with you. So much of this book is about all the people gone bad who are unable to atone in peace.

Here goes the translation for the Sanskrit chant.

Oh God ! Whatever sins I have committed all my lives (including previous lives), please destroy them with every step I take around you.

Nice work (once again). He's one tough writer, that's for sure. I really enjoyed the Marquez connection, too - I didn't know anything about that.
